It is possible to run an SMB Server on Android without root access (on non-privileged port). Mac OS X connects to it without any problems (if you broadcast your ip and port via Bonjour). I'm working on a project to develop an SMB server on Android, and for that i'm using the free Alfresco JLAN server implementation. The question is that i can't use the default ports (445, 139, 138)
What about using the send option in Polaris Office. Use AndSMB, AndFTP, or Astro with the SMB Module to have a connection to the file server directory where you want the file stored. When the user finishes the edits they can send the file using one of the programs above and send it straight to the file server.
